The GIA's 4 C's of Diamond Grading

When considering the price for a GIA certified diamond, it’s important to acknowledge the 4 C's of diamond grading – Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat weight. These four characteristics are used by the GIA to determine the overall quality and value of a diamond.

  • 1. Cut

The diamond cut refers to the way it’s been shaped and polished, and can impact its overall sparkle and appearance.

  • 2. Color

The diamond color is rated on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown), with the more colorless or close to a D color, the more valuable and higher cost the diamond will be.

  • 3. Clarity

The diamond clarity refers to the presence of inclusions (internal flaws) or blemishes (external flaws). A diamond with fewer inclusions and blemishes will be more valuable and more expensive.

  • 4. Carat

The diamond carat size refers to its weight, and diamonds with a higher carat weight will generally be more valuable.

A GIA certified diamond will have been graded according to these 4 C's and the certificate will indicate the grade for each of the 4 C's. White Pine will always provide the original GIA certification with the diamond that you purchase.

GIA Certified Diamonds vs Other Diamond Grading Systems

When it comes to buying a diamond, it's important to understand the different grading systems available and what they mean for the quality of the diamond you're considering. Here are some other well-known diamond grading systems and how they stack up in comparison to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) system.

  • GIA vs IGI

The GIA is widely considered to be the most reputable and trusted diamond grading organization in the world. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) is also a well-known diamond grading organization, but it’s not held in as high regard as the GIA.

While both organizations grade diamonds based on the 4 C's (carat weight, color, clarity, and cut), the GIA diamond grading report is known for its strict grading standards and rigorous testing procedures, while the IGI has a reputation for being more lenient in its grading. This means that when you compare the price of diamond with the same characteristics according to the certificates, the GIA stone will cost more because it's very likely to be of a better grade.

  • GIA vs AGS

The American Gem Society (AGS) is another well-known diamond grading organization, but it’s not as widely recognized or respected as the GIA. The AGS also grades diamonds based on the 4 C's, but it places a greater emphasis on cut quality. The GIA is considered to be more comprehensive and balanced in its grading.

  • GIA vs EGL

The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) is a diamond grading organization that’s not as well-known or respected as the GIA. The EGL has been criticized for its loose grading standards and for over-grading diamonds. Many experts believe that EGL certificates don’t represent the actual grade of the diamonds. Only the GIA represents the authority in the industry.

When buying diamonds, it's best to stick with a GIA-certified diamonds to ensure that you' get what you’re paying for and have a diamond that is resellable.
